Professional photographs are one of the first things a potential buyer sees when looking at a horse online. Before they ever read the pedigree, show record, or description, the photographs are already creating an impression.

Start With a Clean, Well-Groomed Horse

This sounds obvious, but grooming is one of the most important parts of preparing for professional horse photography.

Your horse should arrive clean and dry. A thorough bath the day before the photo session is often ideal, especially for horses with lighter coats.

Pay attention to:

• Face and muzzle

• Eyes and ears

• Mane and tail

• Legs and hooves

• White markings

• Areas where dust or sweat tends to collect

A clean coat photographs much better and allows the horse's color, markings, muscle tone, and overall condition to show accurately.

If you want the horse with no tack, ask your photographer if they have a thin halter designed for photos that is easy removed in post editing.

Bring Someone Who Knows Horses

A professional horse photographer can help with positioning and photography, but having someone there who knows the horse is extremely helpful.

An experienced handler can:

• Help with ears forward

• Move the horse into position

• Recognize when the horse is becoming distracted

• Help keep the session safe and efficient

For young horses or horses that aren't accustomed to photography, having a familiar person handling them can make the entire session much easier. Some horses do well with a friend horse nearby.

For outdoor equine photography, I watch the forecast closely and may recommend adjusting the session time when necessary. Extreme heat, strong wind, storms, or poor lighting can affect both the horse and the quality of the photographs.

During the hotter months, early morning or evening sessions are often more comfortable for horses and handlers.

A professional conformation photograph should should understand horse conformation; balance structural correctness and quality clearly and accurately.

The goal is to present the horse's structure without awkward positioning or distractions. That means paying attention to the horse's stance, head position, ears, lighting, background, and camera angle.

I don't simply take a picture of a horse standing still. I work with the handler to position the horse correctly and watch for the moments when the horse presents itself well.
