When Should You Do Senior Portraits in North Texas?
In many areas Senior pictures are done in the summer before your Senior year, but with the North Texas climate, this is not always possible. In the North Texas area senior portraits are often best taken early fall or early spring of your senior year. This timing allows for a few advantages:
Avoiding Stress: Taking portraits early in the school year means you’re less likely to be stressed by other senior year activities and responsibilities.
Weather: Early fall and spring generally offer better weather and more natural light, which can lead to better photos.
Availability: Photographers might have more availability in winter and summer months, giving you a better chance to book a slot that fits your schedule. Fall and Spring are busier for photographers so book early.
Yearbook Deadlines: If you want to ensure your photo is included in the yearbook, check the submission deadlines with your school. Scheduling your session well in advance helps avoid any last-minute rush.
Summer is also possible but due to the Texas heat early morning sunrise sessions are suggested. Our winters are relatively mild and give some beautiful golden hues so do not rule winter months out.
If backgrounds are important a few things to keep in mind. If you want a more urban look, buildings look the same year round. For more natural, seasons are important. We usually do not get fall color until Thanksgiving or later and fall color is minimal most years. If you want green we still have green in the early to late fall. Spring gets green the first or second week of April. Golden hues can be done anytime but need the sun especially in the winter.
I find I do more senior portraits in the fall. Weather is nicer and slightly more predictable than spring in North Texas. Gives you more time and not rushed. A big plus if your photographer allows it (I do) you can mix in your yearly family portraits for the holidays.

Brooke | Dallas Senior Portraits | Deep Ellum
We did Brooke's Senior Pictures in some of the best locations. I do not photograph much in Dallas, but her and her mom new some great spot. Brooke's mom works in the Art Districts and had access to a tall building where the top floor was not occupied yet. We started early and watch the sunrise from a high rise was something unique for me. There where lots of sculptures and other art that made so interesting backdrops. The building was also close to the Dallas Opera House and loved their very shallow pool. I will definitely be back! after shooting in the Art district, we headed over to Deep Ellum, another 1st for me. SInce my photograph locations are usually rural, it was refreshing to shoot at these locations.
Emily | Liberty Christian | Argyle Senior Photographer
I did Emily's family portraits several years ago and was honored that they had me bad to photograph her senior pictures. I loved all the outfits that she had chosen for her session and Sheila with Horse Show Makeup Artist did her hair and makeup. Emily agreed to do a early morning session and the light was fantastic. Much of the session was done at their neighbors by beautiful stock tank and in their backyard by a wonderful natural looking pool. We then returned to her home do do some of her senior photos with her horse, Vinny. Vinny is an Appaloosa that has tons personality. Vinny is fairly new to Emily and they plan on showing soon.

David | Senior Portraits | Prestonwood Polo
David has three loves, polo, motocross and his truck! He wanted to incorporate all three into his Senior photos. The motocross part didn't work out for the shoot for this location, but we got the other 2 done! David attends Liberty Christian in Argyle Texas and plans on attending Texas A&M next fall with hopes of making the Polo team. We did his senior session at Prestonwood Polo Club in Oak Point Texas where is horses are kept. Another early morning session that stayed cool and we finished before it started heating up.
Rileigh | Argyle Texas Senior | Equine Photographer
To beat the brutally hot Texas summer day, we did Rileigh's session at sunrise. Sunrise session can be hit or miss on what type of sky you can get. It was a hit for her session and we had some beautiful colors. Rileigh's main horse was Texas so the main part of her session was taken with him, but she still wanted some photos with her other horses, Tess & Manny.
Rileigh attends Argyle High School where she plays volleyball. Her mom who is a professional stylist, did her hair & makeup. Loved this session!
Taylor | Class of 2018 | Denton Senior Photographer
Taylor's parents did a great job preparing for Taylor's senior session. Taylor has had a very successful show career, winning almost every title possible with her Santa Gertrudis and she still has her Senior year ahead of her. While Taylor and I did show photos in her 1st outfit, her parents decorated their cattle trailer with many of the awards Taylor has one. Including the largest collection of belt buckles I have ever seen.
Lauryn | Senior 2017 | Gainesville
Lauryn's mother & I where friends many years ago, and I won't say how many. It was great to reconnect with her through social media and was honored when she asked me to photographer her daughter's senior portraits. They used a friends home that had some perfect locations for backdrops and props. Even a food truck! They also has several beautiful Gypsy Horses, we planned on using them in the background, but they decided to join in and be part of the photos. They couldn't of lined more perfect. Lauryn is not a horse person and was a little nervous about them surrounding her, but stood her ground and we got some great photos.
